Tottenham defender Michael Dawson is a target for Premier League strugglers Southampton, according to reports today.

The 28-year-old was linked with a move to QPR this summer but the £9million deal collapsed and Dawson has apparently been told by manager Andre Villas-Boas that he is free to leave Tottenham in January.

Dawson has played just one minute of Premier League football so far this season when he came on as an injury-time substitute during Tottenham’s 3-2 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford at the end of last month.

Southampton are looking to bolster a defence which has conceded a Premier League record of 24 goals in their first eight games and according to the Daily Mirror they could make a £7.5million bid in January.

Meanwhile, Spurs midfielder David Bentley could be on his way back to England. The former England international is on loan at Russian side Rostov but hobbled out of Saturday’s game with Lokomotiv Moscow with an ankle injury.

The 28-year-old Bentley is due to remain with Rostov until January.
