Chelsea will reportedly be making a surprise offer of their own if Wayne Rooney comes onto the transfer market this summer. The England international was linked this week with interest from Arsenal after the Gunners’ chief executive Ivan Gazidis claimed the club had the financial resources to afford his fee – estimated at around £25million – and his wages of over £200,000 a week.
However, Chelsea have a long-standing interest in the England international and newspaper reports today suggested that the Blues will be putting in a counter-bid should Rooney fail to resolve his differences with Manchester United.
The 27-year-old was reported to have hinted to former boss Sir Alex Ferguson that he would quit the club if he is asked to play in a deeper-lying midfield role and talks are expected to take place with new boss David Moyes in an attempt to clear the air.
Meanwhile, Chelsea look set to sign Barcelona youth-team winger Josimar Quintero. The 16-year-old was born in Ecuador and although he started out as a striker he now plays on the wing.
Reports from Spain claim that Quintero is one of three pupils from Barca’s La Masia academy to head to England, with striker Sergi Canos set to join Liverpool and defender Julio Pleguezuelo set for Arsenal. Barcelona aren’t pleased and the news of Chelsea’s interest caused them to drop Quintero from the youth team for the final few weeks of the season.
